Turkish Police Believe Saudi Journalist Was Killed at Consulate

Dr. Muhammad bin Abdul Karim al-Issa Secretary General of the Muslim World League speaks at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy in May 2018

More details from the Turkish authorities are expected on Sunday.

Khashoggi, a former newspaper editor in Saudi Arabia and adviser to its former head of intelligence, left the country a year ago saying he feared retribution for his growing criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent.

His fiancée says he went into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and never came out.

So what do we know about the journalist? The official added: "It was a preplanned murder".

Saudi Arabia has sent a security delegation of investigators to Istanbul to follow up with Turkish authorities. "We believe that the murder was premeditated and the body was subsequently moved out of the consulate", a Turkish official told the Reuters news agency on Saturday.

His Turkish fiancé waited for 11 hours outside, unable to reach him as he surrendered his phone, a requirement in many diplomatic missions in the region. The consulate insists the writer left its premises alive, contradicting Turkish officials.

"Jamal is not dead". "Jamal was not killed and I do not believe he was killed", Hatice Cengiz posted.

"I am following the (issue) and we will inform the world whatever the outcome" of the official probe, Erdogan said, following the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of Riyadh and a Washington Post contributor, who has not been since he visited the consulate on Tuesday.

Saudi officials have denied allegations that Khashoggi was killed at the consulate, calling them "baseless".

"My sense is that he has been killed.in the consulate", Aktay said. Considered a Saudi nationalist, Khashoggi previously served as editor-in-chief at Saudi newspapers al-Arab and Watan and as media adviser to Prince Turki al-Faisal during his terms as ambassador in Washington and London.

A European Commission spokesperson said in a statement that Brussels was "closely" following the case, adding it was "awaiting clarifications from the Saudi authorities on the fate of Mr Khashoggi".

In the September 23 interview, he called Saudi Arabia's foreign policy "narrow minded", and ridiculed its crackdown on political Islam, urging the kingdom to realign its policy to partner with Turkey, a close Qatar ally.

Crown Prince Mohammed is a controversial figure who has received support from Donald Trump. "But all I see now is the recent wave of arrests".

He interviewed Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan before al-Qaida was formed, then met him in Sudan in 1995. In the early 1990s, he tried to persuade bin Laden to reconcile with the Saudi royal family and return home from his base in Sudan, but the al-Qaida leader refused. Its billionaire backer was detained in the Ritz Carlton roundup overseen by Prince Mohammed in 2017.

Riyadh and Ankara stand on opposite sides of the dispute between Qatar and its neighbours. And by mid afternoon on Sunday, no Turkish official had publicly accused Saudi Arabia of killing Khashoggi.

Erdogan, whose AK Party is rooted in political Islam, also supported a government in Egypt led by the Muslim Brotherhood, which Saudi Arabia has designated a terrorist movement.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, the Connecticut Democrat who sits on the Senate's Committee on Foreign Affairs, expressed shock over the news.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said it was alarmed by reports Khashoggi may have been killed inside the consulate.
