Tennis umpires 'thoroughly disturbed' by lack of support from WTA

Herald Sun Defends Racist Serena Williams Cartoon Amid Global Condemnation

Tennis umpires reportedly are considering boycotting Serena Williams' matches in the wake of the tennis star's confrontation with chair umpire Carlos Ramos in the U.S. Open final.

Speaking on Wednesday, Osaka said she was unsure just why the crowd were booing at the time, but Williams had some kind words for the champion.

Portuguese official Carlos Ramos was accused of sexism in the aftermath of the match, which saw him involved in an escalating dispute with Serena Williams that ended with him slapping the player with a one game penalty as she lost in straight sets to Naomi Osaka in NY on Saturday evening.

"I've never had like - oh my God it's so bright - so many people coming to a press conference before so for sure it's sinking in now", she said of her exploding fame, later expressing her gratitude for the Japanese fans that watched her matches in NY and those who waited for her at the airport that morning.

It was even louder because of the closed roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium to keep out the rain. Novak Djokovic celebrates his US Open 2018 victory at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I'm fine, given the circumstances", he told the publication. "There's no one more experienced, no one more knowledgeable, no one more capable as an umpire than Carlos Ramos".

The Women's Tennis Association made a similar argument, claiming that men and women professional tennis players are treated differently by umpires.

Osaka remained composed throughout Williams' repeated on-court protests at umpire Carlos Ramos, as she ended the 36-year-old's bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title. "Ramos undertook his duties as an official according to the relevant rule book", it added. The WTA validated Williams' complaint that the penalties were sexist and would not have been initiated if Williams were a man. USTA President Katrina Adams said there was "no equality".

Williams was assessed three code violations during the the loss to Osaka.

Issues of sexism, officiating double standards and adverse playing conditions have dominated the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open, raising uncomfortable questions and prompting authorities to promise a review of existing policies. Once renewed, she can be part of Forbes' list of highest-paid women in sports, possibly placing second-just below Serena.

One user tweeted, "I love you Amul". "They are all fearful that they could be the next Ramos".

Meanwhile, tennis umpires are also considering forming a union as they feel no one is standing up for them.

Ramos has since spoken out about the backlash via Portugal's Tribuna Expresso.

Real-time reaction: Watch Nike's Kaepernick ad expose a generational divide
There's some people that say they want to talk about it and say they want to discuss it and debate it, but they don't. Woods, who has been with Nike since turning pro in 1996, praised Nike for doing something "beautiful" and "special".

Ramos, whom Carillo said is "very, very respected", is expected to be back in the chair for Davis Cup semifinal matches this week between the United States and Croatia.
