Nadal 'bagelled' but survives Thiem test to reach semis

Kevin Anderson of South Africa hits a return to Denis Shapovalov of Canada during their 2018 US Open men's round 3 match

"I just (kept) going, I'm very sorry for Dominic, he's a close friend on tour, a great guy, and I wish him all the very best".

There was precious little to separate Nadal and Thiem, and in the fifth-set tiebreak, they remained within a point until the last ball. "It was a great battle".

The reigning US Open champion will meet another veteran, the Argentine 2009 victor Juan Martin del Potro, in the next round.

Nadal has beaten Thiem three times at the French Open and seven times in 10 meetings - all on clay. Dominic was more aggressive but Rafa did a great job to stay in touch with him after the opener, winning four games in a row in set number three in one of the deciding moments of the entire encounter.

Typhoon Jebi whips up monster waves, makes landfall in Japan
The capital, Tokyo , will be far from the centre of the storm but was set for heavy rains and high winds by the end of today. About 350,000 buildings were without power as of 2:15 p.m., according to regional utilities, mostly in Wakayama prefecture.

The fourth set was a wild 81-minute ride that began with Thiem facing break points, saw the Austrian threaten a double break before being pegged back and then a tired Nadal miss a chance to win the match. This was the longest match Rafael Nadal has ever played in NY and he was forced to give his best after a slow start and overpower a great rival who finally produced super quality tennis outside clay and proved his position in the Top 10.

World number one Nadal will seek to continue his US Open title defense, taking on Thiem for a place in the semi-finals.

Thiem was also 5-3 ahead in the third set and 4-2 in the fourth before he was reeled in by Nadal, the three-time champion in NY. Thiem raced to a 3-0 lead before Nadal fought back, but the Austrian held his nerve to level the match.

"If we skip the first set, it was a really open match from beginning to the end". But this one went to a tiebreak, lost by a sloppy Nadal more than it was won by Thiem, dragging things to a fifth set. But the last time, against Philipp Kohlschreiber in Miami last spring, he fought back to win the match. The Spaniard finally found his range in the second set, he couldn't dictate the points but he at least started to win points on his serve easily, getting broken once but scoring two breaks for a 6-4.

He superstar also wants to help the Turin club win the Champions League after twice finishing runners-up in the past four seasons. Ronaldo, who was at United between 2003 and 2009, joined Juve for £99.2m in July after nine years at Real Madrid .

Rafa finally started to play with more aggression in set number three, saving a break point at 2-2 before wasting two game points in game seven and allowing Thiem to break him with a return victor.

The pure quality of the tennis peaked in the third set, both players whaling away from the baseline: Nadal unfurling his signature dipping forehand and stepping into his backhand, Thiem hitting the flatter, harder forehand and uncorking a picturesque one-handed backhand.

With Thiem serving at 5-6 30-30, a desperate lunging forehand looked to be easy pickings for Nadal at the net only for the 32-year-old to net it.

With the clock ticking towards 1am and transport options dwindling, many fans headed for the exits while the two adversaries battled on. But Thiem saved all three break points before denying Nadal a fourth opportunity with a stunning volley at the end of a remarkable point. There was no let-up in the tie-break and, after four hours and 49 minutes, it was Nadal who claimed victory when Thiem sent a smash long.
