Britain seeks advice to get around sanctions on Iran

Airlines scrap Iran flights in a dramatic about-face

Turkey-U.S. relations took a nosedive on August 1, when the Trump administration announced sanctions on Turkey's interior and justice ministers after Ankara refused to release an American pastor who faces terrorism-related charges in Turkey. Washington also threatened other countries with sanctions if they don't cut off Iranian oil imports by early November.

Sanctions were lifted in return for Iran committing not to pursue nuclear weapons.

They are expected to argue that the ICJ should not have jurisdiction in the dispute. A final decision could take years.

Mr Trump, who took office previous year, called it a "horrible one-sided deal" that "failed to achieve the fundamental objective of blocking all paths to a Iranian nuclear bomb".

The renewed United States sanctions on Iran have already caused an economic breakdown and a plummeting in the value of the rial.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that the usa will "vigorously defend" itself in the International Court of Justice against Iran's challenge to the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions.

His comments came a day after Iran's defense minister said his country will continue its support of the Syrian government to ensure improved security in the region.

Trump called off Pompeo's North Korea visit after belligerent letter
A United Nations agency recently reported it had not seen any indication that nuclear activities in North Korea have stopped. Pompeo and Kono "agreed that pressure must continue until (North Korea) denuclearizes", the statement read.

In both cases Iran is basing its claim on the obscure 1955 Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations, signed long before the country's Islamic revolution.

USA lawyers will reportedly claim that the friendship treaty signed before the Islamic Revolution in 1979 is no longer valid and that the sanctions Washington has levied against Tehran, do not violate it anyway.

"This policy is nothing but naked economic aggression against my country", stated Mohsen Mohebi, adviser to the Iranian president.

The number of passengers to and from Iran has dropped significantly since U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to drop JCPOA and re-impose sanctions on Tehran and the subsequent freefall of the Iranian national currency's value and raised local departure tax.

Hearings in that case are due to start on October 8.

USA lawyers led by State Department adviser Jennifer Newstead, appointed by Trump in 2017, are due to respond on Tuesday.

Major EU companies, including France's Total, Peugeot, and Renault, and Germany's Siemens and Daimler, have suspended operations in Iran following the introduction of sanctions.

"Certainly, if the court thinks that there's been a violation, it won't shy away from saying so", Lester said, adding other courts in Europe have also looked into the legality of the sanctions.

Both British Airways and Air France announced the dates of their final outbound flights of September 22 and September 17, respectively, with the returns the following day.

In his executive order, Trump argued that the sanctions would turn up the financial pressure on Tehran to come to a "comprehensive and lasting solution" regarding activities that the global community regarded as "malign" such as Iran's "ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism".

Khamenei this month appeared to rule out any immediate prospect of talks, saying "there will be neither war, nor negotiations", with the US.

The ICJ was set up in 1946 to resolve worldwide disputes.

Iranian officials have repeatedly threatened to block the strait, a major oil shipping route, in retaliation for any hostile United States action.
