Rohingyas continue to battle uncertain future in Bangladesh camps

Aung San Suu Kyi was once seen as a beacon of hope for Myanmar but she has now been widely criticised as state counsellor for refusal to speak out against violence committed by the military against the Rohingya

Rohingya refugees on Saturday marked the anniversary of a deadly military crackdown in their Myanmar homeland that drove 700,000 of the persecuted minority into Bangladesh, stateless and confronting a grim future.

Half the Rohingya children who crossed into Bangladesh without their parents were actually orphaned by violence in Myanmar and not separated from them during the refugee exodus as previously thought, new research showed Thursday. In retaliation, the Myanmar military and Buddhist mobs launched waves of attacks, killing people and emptying villages in what many in the worldwide community see as a calculated attempt to drive the Rohingya from the country.

We have researchers on the ground gathering evidence of Myanmar's violent system of apartheid that Rohingya people have been subjected to for years.

The US could also spur a stronger global response in support of the Rohingya.

The Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship decades ago by Myanmar and have been chased from the country in successive convulsions of violence.

The daughter of a Burnley couple, who died on holiday in Egypt, has thanked people for their messages of love and support. . On Tuesday, John Cooper, 69, died in his hotel room at the five-star Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel in Hurghada .

The militant group said it had "the legitimate right" to protect the Rohingya and ensure their "return to our ancestral land with safety and dignity" in a statement posted on Twitter.

Since Myanmar is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, the ICC does not have the jurisdiction in the country and only the UNSC can trigger an investigation by the Court, according to the statement UNB received from Jakarta.

One year later, despite months of discussions among Myanmar, Bangladesh, the United Nations and a string of aid agencies, there are few signs that the Rohingya can go home anytime soon. The report said, a huge worldwide aid effort led by the government of Bangladesh has managed to put basic services for the refugees in place.

Survivors entering Bangladesh's refugee camps carried harrowing accounts of rape, mass killings and arson overseen by the military and ethnic Rakhine villagers - acts the worldwide community have likened to ethnic cleansing.

"The danger of terrorist activities, which was the initial cause of events leading to the humanitarian crisis in Rakhine, remains real and present today", she continued.

Manuel Pellegrini insists West Ham 'dominated parts of Arsenal game'
Getting three points on the board after losing to Manchester City and Chelsea to open up the season will be a big relief for Emery.

"We are in a situation where it is hard to even refer to Rohingya refugees as exactly that", said Kolovos. "But people who are still there are suffering even more than we are, because they are constantly thinking if they are going to survive or be killed". With generous support from KSrelief, 86 staff has been added to the workforce of the Cox's Bazar district hospital, the only facility providing referral services to the vulnerable population and the host community.

"At that time this chamber instructed me to write to Aung San Suu Kyi, making it very clear that as a recipient of the Freedom of our City, we urged her to use her powers to alleviate this human crisis". "It's not a place where children should be living".

As Myanmar is clearly both unwilling and unable to investigate itself, we're now at a stage where the global community must step in to ensure accountability, ' said APHR chairperson Charles Santiago, a member of Malaysian Parliament.

Calls have mounted for Myanmar's military to be held responsible for the campaign, with security forces accused of torture, rape and murder.

The UN has said conditions in Myanmar are not ripe for a safe and voluntary repatriation, especially given the desperate conditions in camps like Thet Kel Pyin, which were established after previous rounds of violence. But Myanmar says it was simply defending itself and bristles at worldwide calls for justice.

He was criticised by Liberal Warren Entsch, who reportedly "got stuck into" Mr Abbott in the joint party room meeting. Dutton has since announced that he will step down as Home Affairs and Immigration Minister.
