Mendocino Complex Fire grows to become largest in California history

This year, California wildfires have burned more land earlier in the "fire season" than usual, said Ken Pimlott, Cal Fire director, during a news conference Saturday. "That's one of those records you don't want to see".

With the fire still burning and containment only at 30 percent, the Mendocino Complex could top the Thomas Fire that burned in Southern California late past year to become the largest in state history.

Trump may be referring to state and federal laws that place water allocations to protect fish and wildlife on equal standing with irrigation and urban user supplies.

A helicopter makes a water drop on windswept flames from the River Fire as it again threatens the town of Lakeport on August 3, 2018. He also encouraged the clearing of trees to stop the fires from spreading. Jerry Brown on Twitter, saying he "must allow the Free Flow of the vast amounts of water coming from the North and foolishly being diverted into the Pacific Ocean". It killed two people, including a firefighter, and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings before being fully contained on January 12.

The Australian and New Zealand firefighters who arrived in the USA last weekend to help fight the wildfires spreading throughout the country have been deployed to blazes in Northern California and OR, the National Interagency Fire Center said Monday.

President Trump nevertheless criticised Democrat Governor Brown, repeating his attacks on California's environmental laws.

As of Sunday morning, the fire has burned 154,524 acres and is 41 percent contained.

The Carr Fire fire has been blamed on the "mechanical failure of a vehicle", which caused sparks to fly in the extremely dry conditions.

The Ferguson Fire started on July 13.

Hotter weather attributed to climate change is drying out vegetation, creating more intense fires that spread quickly from rural areas to city subdivisions, climate and fire experts say.

Overall, experts say Trump's Twitter remarks ignore two of the biggest factors in the wildfires: Climate change, which is likely exacerbating the droughts that lead to fires, and increased development near forests that makes the fires more unsafe to life and property.

Neither McLean nor Jessica Gardetto, a spokeswoman for the Idaho-based fire agency, would address the tweets directly, but Gardetto said by telephone, "Most wildfire suppression efforts involve firefighters and boots on the ground".

More than 14,000 firefighters and hundreds of U.S. army personnel are trying to contain the more than a dozen major fires burning throughout the state.
