Sen. Johnson: Shutdown Threat Not 'Helpful'

A shutdown over Trump's wall at the September deadline would mark the third lapse in appropriations this year, following a shutdown in January as Democrats battled with the Trump administration and congressional Republicans on protections for "Dreamers" as well as a brief shutdown when Republican Sen. He said the border funding issue in particular would probably have to wait until after the elections.
Ryan said on Capitol Hill after the meeting: "The president's willing to be patient to make sure that we get what we need so that we can get that done". He added that money for the wall was "not a question of if, it's a question of when".
This comes in the light of similar threats that Trump has issued in the past, with him saying in March that he would be open to "closing up the country for a while" if he was not to get his wall, the CNN reported.
Congress has given the president some wall funding but not as much as he has requested.
Also, in February, Trump said that he'd "love to see a shutdown" if the government did not focus on immigration.

Tuesday's hearing was a wide-ranging inquiry into immigration enforcement practices and the administration's attempt to deter illegal border crossings by removing more than 2,500 children from their parents and sending them to government shelters.
Another proposal to improve the family separation problem includes hiring more immigration judges to alleviate the 700,000-case backlog now in the system.
As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Connecticut Democrat was part of Tuesday's hearing on the administration's "zero tolerance" policy, which resulted in children being separated from their parents at the southern border. Government funding is now set to expire at the end of the day on September 30, leaving lawmakers just 11 legislative days to negotiate an agreement. The Senate remains in session and is set to go on break the week of August 6 before returning for the rest of the month.
Trump wrote on Twitter Sunday that he'd be "willing to "shut down" government" if the spending bill doesn't include money for border security.
Both chambers will have a short window to approve a spending bill before government funding expires.

At the White House meeting, Trump, Ryan and McConnell agreed that Congress is on track to enact more than half of federal spending before the new budget year begins October 1, but that DHS funding, including the border wall money, doesn't have to be settled before then, according to a person familiar with the meeting who was not authorized to discuss it publicly and insisted on condition of anonymity.
