Barnier blows hole in Theresa May's Brexit plan

Former British PM calls for new referendum on Brexit

That "soft Brexit" plan had cost May great domestic political capital in a cabinet riven by divisions over Brexit seen by some as conceding too much control to the EU.

Today as Mrs May flew to Salzburg for talks with Sebastian Kurz, the Austrian Chancellor, as well as Andrej Babis, her counterpart from the Czech Republic, his colleague, Ales Chmelar, the Czech State Secretary for European affairs, also made clear the PM's plan was unacceptable.

But for pro-Brexit conservatives, already incensed at a government gesturing towards keeping close ties with the European Union instead of breaking completely with the bloc to make fresh free trade deals, this solution is unacceptable. "Maintaining control of our money, law, and borders also applies to the EU's customs policy".

"We saw just a few weeks ago with the Carbon Dioxide shortage how a random shock event can effect supply and we would see that again", he said.

"The EU then need to tell us how they intend to get the frictionless borders that we want to see".

Corker also stressed that senators have "serious doubts" about the White House and how it conducts foreign policy. But The Washington Post and CNN later reported that the omission appeared to be due to a technical issue.

Pro-EU campaigners seized on Mr Barnier's remarks to push their case for a second EU referendum.

Fears of a disorderly Brexit next March have risen as Prime Minister Theresa May struggles to win agreement for her plans to retain close trading alignment with the EU.

The main opposition Labour Party responded to the announcement with shadow Brexit minister Jenny Chapman saying May's newly appointed Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab had been sidelined.

While UK proposals on security marked "a real step forward" and he welcomed the acknowledgement that the European Court of Justice was the only arbiter of EU law, he added: "In contrast, on our future economic relationship, it comes as no surprise that finding common ground between the EU27 and the UK is more hard".

Raab said during what was his second meeting with Barnier after his appointment by May, that agreements had been reached this week with European Union negotiators on a number of issues.

They further amended such that it would become illegal for the government to agree to different customs regulations for Northern Ireland.

Negotiations to provide an outline of how trade will work between Britain and the European Union after Brexit next March and, more particularly, after the end of a status quo transition in 2021, have become tangled up with resolving the Irish question, which Brussels says must be done in a pre-Brexit withdrawal treaty. "Any customs arrangements or customs union. must respect this principle".

"In sum, the United Kingdom has set out our plans in detail".

Insisting there was no sidelining, Raab said later there was no tension and that he will attend all meetings with May.

The EU official also stressed his belief the UK's £39bn divorce bill had been "agreed for good" last December, despite Mr Raab's efforts to make the cash conditional on a future EU-UK trade agreement.
