Pakistanis began voting in a historic third straight election ending a campaign marred by widespread allegations of manipulation that local and worldwide rights group say imperils the country's wobbly transition to democratic rule.

Babar Yaqoob, an official from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), told reporters on July 26 that there was "no conspiracy" and that counting had been delayed by technical failures in an electronic reporting system.

The remainder in the 342-seat Lower House of Parliament includes reserved seats for women and minorities. Voting for two parliamentary seats and six seats in provincial assemblies has been postponed due to attacks on candidates or disqualifications.

It still wasn't clear whether Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would get a simple majority or have to form a coalition.

The fiercest part of the race is expected to be between the two right-wing parties - the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) of three-time Premier Nawaz Sharif, who is now in jail following a corruption verdict against him, and the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) led by former cricket star Imran Khan.

Mesut Ozil Reveals How He Feels About Arsenal’s Singapore Tour
Arsenal manager Unai Emery has supported Mesut Ozil's decision to quit Germany's national team. Arsenal will also play Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in the tournament.

Television projections give his party 61 seats. The PTI chief added that he plans to set up a Medina-like welfare state in Pakistan, referring to the governance system at the time of the Prophet.

In Balochistan, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) is leading on 12 provincial seats, followed by Balochistan National Party (BNP) on 9 seats, based on unofficial results from 35pc polling stations.

The build-up to the elections was marred by allegations that the all-powerful army was trying to manipulate the process and install a PTI-led government. The winning party will face several issues, including a crumbling economy and violence from militants.

A suicide bomber has killed at least 31 people and wounded many more at a polling station in the Pakistani city of Quetta, rounding off a campaign season stained by indiscriminate violence.

If successful, the elections will mark only the second time a civilian government has handed power to another in Pakistan since the country's independence in 1947.

Any government will also compete for influence over foreign policy with Pakistan's powerful military, which has ruled for much of the nation's history and faced accusations of meddling in the campaign - allegations it denied.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella: "Marchionne wrote an important page in the history of Italian industry". Marchionne was suddenly replaced as the CEO of Fiat-Chrysler last Saturday, after his condition worsened.

At another polling station, Samra Aslam, 53, said she was voting for Sharif because he had brought development to the country. Radical Islamic terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) claimed responsibility for the deadly blast, according to the group's propaganda outlet, the Amaq News Agency. Baluchistan has seen relentless attacks, both by the province's secessionists and Sunni militants who have killed hundreds of Shiites there.

Before official results arrived, PTI and Khan supporters took to the streets to celebrate the initial results on Wednesday night. Most of the revelers were young men, who danced to the sound of beating drums draped in Tehreek-e-Insaf party black and green-colored flags. Khan, who is a cricket legend of nearly mythical proportions, has appealed to the the youth with promises of a new Pakistan.

"What they have done has pushed Pakistan back 30 years ..."

In an effort to increase voter participation, the Election Commission has declared a public holiday on Wednesday. Earlier, speaking to CNN-News18, former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf voiced his support for the mandate in favour of Imran Khan.
