Trump and Iran Trade Barbs Over Twitter

The Latest: Schumer chides Trump for heated rhetoric on Iran

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says President Donald Trump's tweet on Iran is a sign he is desperate to distract Americans from last week's summit meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Within hours, Iran's state-owned news agency IRNA dismissed Mr Trump's tweet, describing it as a "passive reaction" to Mr Rouhani's remarks. Speculation was that this was an attempt to replicate the USA strategy in North Korea, where threats were followed with successful diplomacy.

"Their message is that the place is on the verge of overthrowing the Islamic Republic, which has been a claim for the last 40 years and that they, in particular, are the logical democratic, pluralistic replacement".

In retaliation, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday warned Trump to "be cautious".

In response, Trump went on Twitter "punching caps lock and flooring it", Colbert quipped. We've been around for millennia & seen fall of empires, incl our own, which lasted more than the life of some countries.

According to Kaplan, the man had already helped the little boy get a ball earlier in the game. "All is well. The Cubs got involved after the video went out. "The fact of the matter is, he got balls for three kids".

He said that the US Broadcasting Board of Governors was going to attempt to circumvent Internet censorship in Iran by creating a slew of Farsi media outlets (including television, radio, digital and social media) to show "ordinary Iranians inside Iran and around the globe [that] America stands with them". Some observers thought Pompeo and Trump were "trolling" Iranian leadership, in a coordinated effort.

"I withdrew the United States from the awful one-sided Iran nuclear deal, and Iran is not the same country anymore", Trump told the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Kansas City.

For some analysts in Washington, Trump's harsh words were a political smoke screen.

In election-charged Pakistan, Mahathir makes an 'appearance'
BehindYouSkipper became one of the country's top trending hashtags as celebrities and former cricketers came to Khan's support. Gandapur's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, condemned the attack, but campaigning continued ahead of Wednesday's polls.

But retired US ambassador John Limbert, a former deputy assistant secretary of state for Iran, has his doubts.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif fired back at Donald Trump on Monday, calling the U.S. president's Sunday threat via Twitter unimpressive.

Several observers noted the similarities between the threats on Iran, and Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign towards Pyongyang.

However, concrete progress has been scant so far on denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

And Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, the 2016 Democratic vice presidential candidate, called the Twitter blast from the White House "another warning sign that Trump is blundering toward war with Iran".

"Reckless Iran rhetoric creates risks - especially if words are unbacked by actionable strategy", Senator Richard Blumenthal said.
