Theresa May takes personal control of Brexit negotiations

British voters EU

Hunt said he wanted the United Kingdom and Germany to remain "best friends" after Brexit but warned that British relations with the continent will inevitably suffer if the EU's negotiators do not change their attitude.

He added that the lack of a deal, while damaging for Britain, would provoke a backlash among British voters against the EU.

"What the prime minister means is that she meant all along that the overall strategy and conduct of these negotiations she regards very much as her personal responsibility now with the secretary of state very close at hand".

This is at a time when US President Donald Trump is presumably only starting the first of many trade jousts; a time when the European Union seeks to augment and double-down on free trade with the rest of the world.

The EU has also agreed to a post-Brexit transition period in which Britain would effectively remain a member of the bloc until the end of 2020, to ease the break.

The pro-Brexit Davis wanted a clean break from the European Union and resigned in protest at May's plan to keep European Union rules for trade in goods.

Fears of a no deal Brexit have been growing in recent days after Theresa May's compromise plan prompted a string of resignations, including that of Mr Raab's predecessor David Davis.

Asked whether he would be "calling the shots" in his new job, the Brexit Secretary told the House of Commons last week: "No, it is the Prime Minister and the Cabinet".

The EU has also raised major questions about the proposal.

Some global businesses have stepped up planning for a so-called "no deal" though they admit there is little clarity about what such a scenario would look like.

"We are making sure both in the allocation of money - £3bn extra allocated last Budget - and through operational things like hiring extra border staff...that we are ready for any and every eventuality".

Britain will publish around 70 "technical notices" in August and September setting out what citizens and businesses would need to do.

Yesterday new Brexit secretary Dominic Raab confirmed plans would be put in place for food to be stockpiled, while health secretary Matt Hancock said the NHS was preparing to stockpile medicines and blood products.

Challenged about reports of stockpiling food by MPs on the Brexit select committee, Mr Raab said: 'It would be wrong to describe it as the Government doing stockpiling.

He added: "Over months now, ministers, the prime minister and of course the official team supporting them have been sounding European parliaments out on all of the issues".
