PM Modi donates cows to 200 families in Rwanda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on two-day visit to Rwanda, said both countries have several opportunities to grow together.

Modi's visit kicked off in Rwanda on July 23.

Modi also hailed India's ties with Uganda and other African nations, saying the resource-rich continent is now in the centre of his government's foreign policy.

The Prime Minister will first visit Rwanda, followed by Uganda and South Africa.

Demonstrating the importance of Africa for emerging powers, Modi's arrival in the Rwandan capital took place a little more than 24 hours after Chinese president Xi Jinping's visit.

Noting that Samsung recently opened the world's biggest mobile phone manufacturing plant in Uttar Pradesh, Modi said, "It's possible that when you buy a smartphone in Uganda next time, you will get the one Made in India".

China, he added, is willing to elevate the strategic significance of its relationship with the AU, set it as an example and make it more effective, so as to bring more benefits to the Chinese and African people.

Kagame, who has been president of Rwanda for last 18 years, has also become an important political actor in the content. India had elevated its bilateral relations with Rwanda to the level of a strategic partnership in January a year ago.

The Rwandan president also expressed his hope to strengthen exchanges with China on state governance and deepen win-win cooperation on bilateral as well as multilateral platforms.

Six other agreements were also signed between both countries. Addressing a joint press conference, Mr Modi said, India will soon open a High Commission in Rwanda which will not only establish communication between the governments of the two countries but also enable facilities for consular, passport and visa.

India also extended two lines of credit - one of Dollars 100 million for development of industrial parks and Kigali special economic zone (SEZ) in Rwanda and another one for USD 100 million for agriculture.

The Girinka scheme, which Modi said "is helping transform the lives of people across rural Rwanda", has been celebrated for helping to reduce poverty by nearly a quarter between 2000 and 2010.

After a hard time, in the efficient and strong leadership of President, today the Indian society is contributing a lot in Uganda's social and economic life.
