Woman attacked for wearing Puerto Rican shirt speaks out

Officer Who Didn’t Step In When Woman In Puerto Rico Shirt Was Harassed Resigns

A Chicago man charged with a felony hate crime after a video went viral showing him scolding a woman for wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a Puerto Rican flag will return to court on August 1 after his release on bond, authorities said on Friday.

He also faces separate charges of assault and disorderly conduct after a June 14 incident involving Mia Irizarry that was recorded on video.

Irizarry had a permit for the space, officials said, and she says in the video she was there for a birthday party.

In the video, Trybus could be seen telling the woman that she should not be wearing the T-shirt in the United States, despite her attempting to explain that Puerto Rico is a USA territory.

But with Mueller still investigating, it's not known whether further indictments are taking shape or will. Mr Rosenstein said: "We know that the goal of the conspirators was to have an impact on the election".

The Cook County Forest Preserve District police officer, Patrick Connor, resigned Wednesday, and the investigation into the incident continues, the agency said.

He has since resigned from the force. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said Timothy Trybus, 62, has been charged with two counts of felony hate crime.

Trybus appeared in court Friday on charges of a hate crime, assault and disorderly conduct. She said that "just encouraged (Trybus) to be more aggressive". It also had "Puerto Rico" written below the neckline. "Are you a citizen of the United States", Trybus is heard asking. As we said yesterday, if a white woman said she was being harassed by a Black or Latin person, the police would have reacted with a quickness. "Are you a citizen?" She asks the officer for help, saying the man is making her feel uncomfortable.

Still the 36-minute video of the confrontation posted by Mia Irizarry, the woman targeted in the vide left many people upset.

I think that's what I was doing in the past, I was limiting myself. "This was not inevitable for me". Now for sure she had a lot of big confidence, especially after the matches she won here already.

"I wonder where they get such an idea?"

"It was extremely surreal to think that someone whose job is to protect and serve could just completely walk away..." she said at a park in a Chicago neighborhood with a large Puerto Rican population, in her first public comments about the incident. "Then you should not be wearing that". We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background.

In the wake of the incident, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle offered her apology to the woman and took the unusual step of calling Ricardo Rossello, the governor of Puerto Rico.

Lonnie Nasatir, midwest regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, told the Chicago Tribune that a hate-crime charge might be warranted.
