Red State Democrats In Hot Seat Over Trump's Supreme Court Pick

US President Donald Trump has nominated federal appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

During his remarks, President Trump touted his previous Supreme Court nomination of Neil Gorsuch, who replaced the late-Justice Antonin Scalia a year ago.

Kavanaugh then served as Bush's counsel in the White House before Bush nominated him for the D.C. Circuit in July 2003. The official said Trump decided on Kavanaugh because of his large body of jurisprudence cited by other courts, describing him as a judge that other judges read.

President Donald Trump is set to announce his nomination for the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, to fill the seat vacated by Justice Anthony Kennedy when he announced his retirement on the last day of the Supreme Court session on June 28th. Like Trump's first nominee previous year, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts of Obamacare. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would be the second justice installed by Trump, who nominated Neil Gorsuch to the court shortly after being inaugurated a year ago.

Two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, are pro-abortion and have said they would vote against a candidate who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Quebec heat wave death toll hits 44
More than 30 people have died as a result of a heat wave in the Canadian province of Quebec, officials said Thursday. Prior to this, the only heat wave that Parent remembers being so memorable was a four to five day period in 2010.

"I'm very confident with this president's enthusiasm and with Leader [Mitch] McConnell's enthusiasm that they can get anybody confirmed", Leo told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" Sunday.

Hardiman, originally recommended to Trump by his sister, Third Circuit Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, was again a finalist, having a backstory that appeals to POTUS: first member of his family to graduate college. It is unclear yet if any Democrats in the Senate will vote to confirm him - but Kavanaugh needs almost every GOP vote he can get. More recently, she's written that abiding by precedent is "not a hard-and-fast rule" in the Supreme Court's constitutional cases.

The coming battle over a Supreme Court nominee promises to be a bruising one. He also worked on independent counsel Ken Starr's investigation of President Bill Clinton.

The nominee must be confirmed by the US Senate, which the Republican president's party narrowly controls 51-49.

Burrus says that while "Trump's method of choosing a justice is not exactly traditional, but it is not that objectionable given the circumstances".

Trump to wait after midterms to sign new NAFTA deal
Trump told Fox News in an exclusive interview. "I want to make it more fair, OK?" Additionally, Mexico has imposed new tariffs. Canada announced Sunday that the tariffs amount to $16.6 billion Canadian dollars or $12.5 billion in USA dollars.

Republican Sen. John Neely Kennedy of Louisiana said he was bracing for a tough confirmation battle as Democrats focus on abortion.

The White House is hoping the Senate moves quickly to confirm Kavanaugh before the midterm elections in November threaten to unfurl the narrow Republican majority in the chamber and nix the precious leverage the GOP holds over some red state Democrats up for reelection in 2018. His boosters, sensing this weekend that Hardiman could be ascending on the president's list, have been busy making phone calls to friends in Trump's inner circle.

Support for nomination: Barrett also served as a law clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who is beloved by conservatives. Heidi Heitkamp - voted "yes" on the confirmation of his first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch.

In her 20s, she co-authored a paper that said Catholic judges, if they are faithful to church teachings, are "morally precluded" from enforcing the death penalty. But in a law review article in 2009, Kavanaugh wrote that it was not in the public's interest to indict a sitting president. Democratic senators running for re-election in states Trump carried in 2016 will face pressure to back his nominee. Three Democratic senators who voted for Gorsuch - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia - are up for re-election IN states Trump won handily IN 2016.
