Germany out of World Cup; Mexico advances despite loss against Sweden

Toni Kroos of Germany celebrates scoring his sides winning goal during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group F match between Germany and Sweden

A defeat to Mexico set the tone for their campaign, and although they managed a dramatic last-gasp win over Sweden, their loss to South Korea proved costly.

South Korea's superstar Son Heung-min found the ball in Germany's half and slotted it into their unattended net.

That result in Kazan, coupled with Sweden's 3-0 win over Mexico in the other group match in Ekaterinburg, meant the Swedes and Mexico progressed to the round of 16.

The four-time champions needed to beat the unfancied Asians by two clear goals in their final group F match in Kazan to advance to the last 16.

One of the pre-tournament favourites going into the World Cup, Germany were brought back down to reality in the first game as they were shocked 1-0 by Mexico thanks to a goal from Hirving Lozano.

Over 500 ICE Protesters Arrested Inside US CAPITOL — CAPITOL CHAOS
On Thursday, Capitol Police arrested almost 600 people as they demonstrated inside a Senate office building. Kauffman said the ultimate goal of the so-called movement was to remove the president from office.

Germany coach Joachim Loew caused a surprise by leaving midfield attacking stalwart Thomas Mueller on the bench for the first time since 2012 after his underwhelming displays against Mexico and Sweden.

In a shocking upset, South Korea has beaten Germany in the World Cup, denying the defending champions a chance to advance beyond the first round.

"This is a huge disappointment for us - there was deathly silence in the dressing room", said Low. The defending champions lost to South Korea 2-0 on Wednesday.

"Germany are the defending champions and number one in the Federation Internationale de Football Association ranking, so I thought about what mistakes Germany might make, because they probably felt they would be able to beat us - that's what everybody thought".

Everyone was waiting for Germany to score another late World Cup-saving goal. France in 2002, Italy in 2010 and Spain in 2014 all suffered the same fate as the Germans who went into the tournament with the nucleus of the side that triumphed in Brazil four years ago.

England with Ankle Injury
It is the first time since 1938 that a Germany or West Germany side has not progressed beyond the first section of the tournament. Now, we seem to be faced with a similar dilemma with teams that play later can engineer their performance to chart their course.

Germany were caught out at the back as they threw men forward in search for a late victor, with Kim Young-Gwon flicking home inside the box two minutes into injury time. "Even after the 1-0 we still tried to turn things around", said Hummels to ZDF.

South Korea's goalkeeper Cho Hyeon-woo made a fine one-handed save from Leon Goretzka's header and Timo Werner volleyed wide from near the penalty shot.

We've done very well and we're happy and we deserved to win. Originally called out for offside, the goal was given after video review.

Timo Werner, Marco Reus, Mesut Ozil and second-half substitute Mario Gomez were among the Germany stars who failed to take goal scoring chances as the South Koreans defended with determination.
