'Little House On The Prairie' Author's Name Removed From Book Award

"Only Indians lived there", implied that Native Americans were not people-in response, the publisher then changed "people" to "settlers".

Wilder was the first author to receive the award in 1954, nearly 20 years after she wrote the famous 1935 novel, in which she described unoccupied land as a place where "there were no people".

"Yet perceptions matter, along with the very real pain associated with her works for some, and year after year ALSC gives the impression of upholding Wilder's works through an award that bears her name".

MAYER: Lindsay says the ALSC spent months surveying librarians and readers on their feelings about Wilder and that most of her membership supports the move, although some have struggled with it.

Saudi Arabia v Egypt 25 June 2018
Just minutes later, however, a second penalty was given to Saudi Arabia , and this time converted by Salman Al Faraj . Egypt's hordes of supporters showed their support for Salah, roaring him on whenever he got near the ball.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, the woman who wrote the "Little House on the Prairie" book series, was removed as the namesake of a prestigious children's book award.

It was also, as a statement about the award change from the Laura Ingalls Wilder Legacy & Research Association acknowledged, "encumbered with the perspectives of racism that were representative of her time and place".

Harper's in 1953 chose to change "people" to "settlers" but other criticisms focused on her depictions of Native Americans and some African Americans.

One particular example cited by her critics is the line "there were no people". Wilder herself called the word choice a "stupid blunder" in 1952, saying "Of course Indians are people and I did not mean to imply they were not".

Erdogan takes big lead in Turkey presidential vote, results show
If a candidate wins just over 50 percent of the vote, he will win the presidency, but if not, there will be a runoff on July 8. Erdogan accused his late ally and now nemesis, US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, of masterminding the coup.

Until her death in 1957 she was beloved for the semi-autobiographical "Little House" children's books, fictionalised versions of her family's adventures travelling the western frontier in their covered wagon and its encounters with Native Americans.

The American Library Association is based in Chicago. Previously, the organization had noted the "anti-Native and anti-Black sentiments" in Wilder's writing. The semi-autobiographical books followed the trials and tribulations of her real-life family, the Ingalls, as they survived pioneer life in the American West.

In addition, in another scene, Wilder depicts white men wearing blackface for the entertainment of others - including her father. The characters of "Pa" and "Ma" are frequently furious and fearful of Indians, which while realistic to a point, certainly doesn't tell the entire story of history.
