Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and partner Clarke Gayford with their newborn baby girl

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern carries her newborn baby Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford with her partner Clarke Gayford as she walks out of the Auckland Hospital in New Zealand, June 24, 2018.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has left hospital after giving birth to a baby girl.

Speaking publicly for the first time since her delivery on Thursday - which made waves around the world - Ardern said she and her partner Clarke Gayford had settled on the full name of Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford for their first child.

She has now become the first woman in the country's history to give birth while in office.

She and Mr Gayford had opted to spell the name Neve - as opposed to Niamh, for example - for simplicity, with Ms Ardern joking about the unusual spellings of Clarke and Jacinda.

Prince William's "historic" visit to the Middle East
CNN reports that William is also expected to visit Jerusalem's Old City, the Mount of Olives and the Church of St. He'll be here to see a little bit of the country and to get to meet some of the people here.

The world will get its first glimpse of the PM's baby Sunday before mum and dad leave hospital to take her home. "We are really happy for her, it's awesome and so special", she said.

Ardern has yet to announce a name for her daughter, after earlier saying the couple was having difficulty deciding.

"Baby slept a lot more last night ... but the PM admits she didn't sleep much while baby slept which is probably because she is still very excited about everything".

Ms Ardern has assured commentators it'll be business as usual during her six weeks off.

They also share a birthday with former Pakistan Prime Minister and first female leader of a Muslim nation Benazir Bhutto.

"I won't forget the look on Jacinda's face when she finally held the baby", he said.

The name Neve meant "bright" or "radiant", Ardern explained.

"We chose Neve because we just liked it, and when we met her we thought she looked like she suited the name", the 37-year-old told reporters as she cradled her daughter in her arms.

Ardern previously said she plans to return to work at the beginning of August.

"Te Aroha was our way of reflecting the amount of love this baby has been shown even before she even arrived.it's also the place where all my family are from and I grew up under that mountain".
