The baby, whose name has not yet been announced, was born on Thursday at Aukland City Hospital in New Zealand and weighs 7.3lbs.

Ms Ardern, who refused to discuss plans for motherhood during the election campaign, waited until January to reveal on Facebook she had conceived and was going to be "prime minister and a mum".

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to a baby girl.

"Welcome to our village wee one", Ardern wrote in the caption on Instagram.

The PM follows former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as the second world leader to give birth while in office.

Ardern, 37, took office as New Zealand's third female prime minister past year and announced in January that she was expecting a baby with her partner, a TV fishing show presenter.

'Let's also celebrate Clarke as a modern man who is happy to be the full-time parent of a young child.

The 37-year-old was admitted to Auckland Hospital on Thursday just after 6 a.m. and she posted on her Instagram page that she gave birth at 4.45 p.m. NZST.

"As acting prime minister, the deputy prime minister may exercise other prime ministerial functions and powers, in consultation (where appropriate and practicable) with the prime minister".

With the safe arrival of the Prime Minister's newborn baby girl have come well wishes for the new family of three.

News that Ardern was expecting prompted then New Zealand opposition leader Bill English to send his congratulations and hope that she was given "the space to be able to conduct relatively normal family life".

Ardern - who is the world's youngest female head of government - will now have six weeks of maternity leave before returning to work.

"We're a family that are fairly well grounded and to see this on the worldwide media is absolutely different - I can say that without a shadow of a doubt", he said.

"I think this will give women a boost, of really believing anything is possible", Werth continued.

Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tweeted: "The whole world is wishing you well".
