U.S. Trade Is Trump's Main Focus at G-7 Gathering

Justin Trudeau

In response to Trudeau's objection to the recent steel and aluminum tariffs, Trump reportedly joked: "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?". The prime minister appeared to be buttering up Trump during the start of his presidency and even recently was more upbeat on the prospects of a deescalation of the trade fight.

Trudeau has denounced the "national security" justification for the new tariffs. "He's sticking to his guns".

Kudlow says Trump "hates multilateral" treaties. "The lines are open".

Kudlow added that the United States and China had not yet reached a deal to resolve Trump's demand for a smaller US trade deficit with China.

"This is further weakening trans-Atlantic relations and increases the risk of severe turbulence in the markets globally", said European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmstrom.

The agreement governs trade between the US, Canada and Mexico.

Melania Trump makes appearance after 24 days out of sight
She had not been seen in public since undergoing kidney surgery on 10 May. "We're used to our first ladies being out and about". She sent early signals that she will not bow to speculation or public expectations about what she should be doing.

Kudlow also pointedly denied a media report suggesting U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin tried to talk the president into extending an exemption for Canada from the steel tariffs, calling it "patently false".

"The idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is, quite frankly, insulting and unacceptable", Trudeau told NBC's Meet the Press.

News agency Reuters said that the retaliatory tariffs could "have political implications in some hotly contested races" in the United States midterm elections in November, in which the Republican Party is seeking to maintain control of both houses of Congress.

In response Canada implemented retaliatory tariffs on USA goods.

The move could create more cross-border economic uncertainty between Washington, Ottawa and Mexico City after Trump imposed metal tariffs on imports from its neighbors. Canada announced dollar-for-dollar tariffs on steel and aluminum, as well as sanctions of 15 percent to 25 percent on whiskey, orange juice and other food products.

It's a dark turn for the G-7, which first met in 1975 when it included only six countries: the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Italy and Japan.

Trump flouts federal rule with tweet touting job numbers
Meanwhile, Larry Kudlow, White House chief economic advisor, characterized the G7 pushback as "more of a family quarrel". The federal jobs data that the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases on the first Friday of each month at 8:30 a.m.

"The United States must, at long last, be treated fairly on trade", the President tweeted on Saturday.

"We will do what is necessary to protect the United States, its businesses and its workforce", he added. European allies have urged Trump to reconsider.

Governments hosting Group of Seven summits typically select themes that are as non-controversial as possible, and then couch them in vanilla language that everyone can get behind.

"We wanted to ensure that the issue is a top priority for key decision makers at the highest level", said another Mexican official who requested anonymity.

"We understand what the president is trying to do in terms of the broader discussions", he told Maria Bartiromo on "Mornings with Maria" on Wednesday.

Despite the G7's efforts to coax the Trump administration away from a go-it-alone approach, some analysts now question whether Washington remains committed to basic policies that have upheld the post-World War Two worldwide economic system. "We think that demonstrating the strength of NAFTA as a solid community as we take on the world is very much in all three of our advantages, and we're going to continue to negotiate that way".

YouTube tops teen social media, as Facebook fades
Facebook , meanwhile, was only used by 51-percent of the teens surveyed , and only 10-percent of them say they use it most often. The shares of teenagers who use Twitter and Tumblr are largely comparable to the shares who did so in the 2014-2015 survey .
