Bank Holiday Monday weather to break records, with 27C forecast

In its long-range forecast from the middle of next week towards mid-May, the Met Office said there is "some uncertainty" but notes that "at this stage it looks like most places will stay mainly dry with sunny spells".

"This holiday was only introduced in 1978, some 40 years ago, but the record has stood for nearly 20 years when we saw 23.2C (73F) in 1999".

He said: "Swathes of Britain are about to enjoy a warm and settled Bank Holiday weekend".

It will be a fine evening, with plenty of warm sunshine.

Temperatures could soar to 28C in parts of England as people round off their three-day weekend - making it the hottest Bank Holiday Monday in 40 years.

The forecaster also indicated high UV and pollen levels for the region.

The Met Office said it was "almost guaranteed" to be the hottest early May Bank Holiday Monday since 1999.

"We expect to see temperatures ranging from the low to mid 20Cs quite widely and all it will take is a small nudge in the right direction to reach the 30C-mark".

Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson told Sky News: "We have a lovely weekend on the way, with high pressure dominating". However, coastal areas will be a little cooler with an onshore breeze.

Tuesday will remain warm before temperatures ease and showers begin to hit the United Kingdom during the week.

Miss Yeomans said the warm and sunny weather forecast for southern Britain is a reversal of conditions in early May a year ago.

Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 25°C in parts of the North East tomorrow, on what could be the hottest Early May Bank Holiday on record.

The return to warm and sunny weather follows very wet weather in southern and eastern England earlier this week.
