SpaceX attempts high speed boat recovery of the Falcon 9's nosecone

SpaceX will add lots of space traffic over the next few days

With the launch two days away, Iridium CEO Matt Desch said in a tweet Tuesday the company was "having an issue" with one of the 10 satellites being prepared, pushing the attempt to Saturday.

On Friday, March 30 at 7:13 a.m., SpaceX successfully launched the Iridium-5 mission from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

"This is the first approval of a USA -licensed satellite constellation to provide broadband services using a new generation of low-Earth orbit satellite technologies", the Federal Communications Commission said in a statement. SpaceX did not respond to a CNBC request for comment regarding whether Friday's launch attempt would see new fairing recovery technologies deployed. With this launch, it will be the twelfth commercial resupply mission in which SpaceX will fly to the International Space Station.

The Iridium-5 NEXT Mission marked the fifth set of 10 satellites launched for the NEXT global satellite constellation.

Musk, who is also the co-founder and chief executive of electric automaker Tesla Inc., said in 2015 that SpaceX planned to launch a satellite-internet business that would help fund a future city on Mars.

It was not immediately clear why a remote sensing license was an issue for SpaceX on Friday's mission when SpaceX has live streamed the launch of previous missions without issue. The operator also said its satellite network, used to provide voice and data connectivity for governments, vehicles and other end users, passed 1 million active subscribers just prior to Friday's launch. A total of eight Iridium NEXT launches are now planned with SpaceX delivering a total of 75 new satellites to orbit. The mission lasted approximately 75 minutes. The remaining three launches are expected to be completed over the next several months. In total, 81 satellites are being built, with 66 in the operational constellation, nine serving as on-orbit spares and six as ground spares, reports Iridium Communications.
