What is up with the Facebook privacy issue? Things you should know

People Have Found Facebook Logged All Their Private Messages And Call History

Facebook is now at the center of a widespread privacy scandal that has revealed just how vulnerable users' online data is to exploitation.

Facebook (FB) says it is shutting down an advertising product that allowed marketers to tap data from people's lives outside of Facebook to target them on the platform, as the company tries to soothe concerns about the service's data-privacy methods.

After removal of this option, advertisers can still target users but will have to rely on Facebook's own targeting tools.

Previously, the settings were spread across almost 20 different screens and they're now accessible from a single place. The study, which included 764 participants and followed a format for privacy policies modeled after a nutrition label, also found that people got through simpler policies more quickly and were less frustrated by the experience.

Facebook changes privacy settings: What you need to know
These settings were previously spread out across nearly 20 different screens; going forward, they will be accessible from one. These updates, the company insists, "are about transparency - not about gaining new rights to collect, use, or share date".

Facebook will still collect data from its users that they supply to the service, such as their status updates, their likes, birthdays and work history. This ranges from what ads users see, the ability to add two-factor authentication, and controlling who sees a user's profile. This decision came after the recent scandal of hijacking personal information at the social networking giant. Though we don't know exactly what the firm did with the data, it was likely used to influence an election - suggesting Trump may not have won the election fairly. Earlier this year, Facebook made a change to its newsfeed to prioritize content posted by family and friends, and said it would show fewer links to articles and other types of content.

If you have reached the end of the road on Facebook and feel like it no longer serves a meaningful goal in your life, perhaps it's time to delete your account.

"We've heard loud and clear that privacy settings and other important tools are too hard to find and that we must do more to keep people informed." explain Erin Egan, VP and Chief Privacy Officer, Policy and Ashlie Beringer, VP and Deputy General Counsel.

"It would be concerning in my mind if Facebook is designing and releasing a hardware device that uses facial recognition, as they already have one of the largest facial recognition databases in the world", Electronic Foundation attorney Jennifer Lynch told The Information. Users can delete anything from their timeline or profile if they want.

Facebook's Web site lists nine third-party data providers that it has worked with, including Acxiom, Experian, Oracle Data Cloud, TransUnion and WPP.

"I started Facebook, and at the end of the day I'm responsible for what happens on our platform".

At the time, Facebook allowed Kogan to collect the data for academic use specifically.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) continues to make moves in an attempt to shore up trust in how it handles customer data.
