NY bomber, Ahmad Rahimi, sentenced to life in prison

Mardi Gras

Chelsea bomber Ahmad Rahimi was sentenced Tuesday to multiple life terms for setting off a shrapnel-packed explosive as part of a wave of planned attacks in NY and New Jersey.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized United States citizen who was born in Afghanistan and lived in New Jersey, injured 30 people when one of his homemade bombs exploded in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on a September night in 2016.

Authorities said it was a miracle no one was killed by Rahimi's fiendish blast, which sent a nearby dumpster flying more than 120 feet and sprayed shrapnel that tore into the chests, legs and eyes of innocent passers-by. "You might have grievances, and they might be genuine, but there's no comparison between those slights or grievances you might have and the acts you undertook as the Chelsea bomber".

"It's really hard to square the way you appear in court to that other behavior", Berman said.

Though Rahimi pleaded not guilty, a 12-person jury found him guilty of all eight counts.

Rahimi was also ordered to pay $563,000 to victims. Federal Judge Richard Berman, who presided over the trial, imposed the sentence Tuesday in NY.

Nancy Pelosi Against Budget Deal Unless DACA Vote
Senate leaders said that they do not want to shut down the government again and see little risk that it would occur. Rand Paul repeatedly held up votes on the budget plan, futilely seeking a vote on reversing spending increases.

He allegedly placed a small pipe bomb on the route of a charity running race in New Jersey, which exploded without injuring anyone, and then planted the two bombs in Chelsea.

Some failed to detonate and others were dealt with by police explosives experts. Rahimi was shot several times but survived.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, an Afghan-born U.S. citizen, appears in court.

He described how his father went to law enforcement on multiple occasions to report suspicious behavior he had seen in his son, but ultimately felt let down. "We remain vigilant, resolute and safe", de Blasio wrote in a tweet after Rahimi's conviction in October. "He's proud of what he has done".

Rahimi, a 30-year-old US citizen born in Afghanistan, said that he had been "harassed" by authorities while travelling because of his Muslim appearance after he started practicing the religion.

Using fingerprints found inside the unexploded devices, authorities tied the Afghan-born US citizen to a series of bombings that injured 30 across the area.

YouTube Suspends Advertising On Logan Paul's Channel Over Animal Abuse
On the back of this criticism, YouTube has suspended advertising on his channel . The youtuber didn't appear noticeably humbler than ever before his hiatus.

Rahami also allowed some inmates to view materials on his laptop or provided electronic copies as he spread The Book of Jihad, bomb-making instructions and various issues of a propaganda magazine, the court heard.

Defense attorney Xavier Donaldson said that Rahimi had once aspired to be a police officer and worked as a security guard after studying criminal justice at a community college.

Pauline Nelson was hurt when her auto was hit by the explosion. She's still being treated for muscle spasms in her back.

She lambasted Rahimi for not apologising to his victims. "You have no remorse for what you did".

Rahimi was arrested and charged after a pressure cooker bomb went off in New York's Chelsea neighborhood the night of September 17, 2016.

Oxfam revelations lead to more accountability for charities
Meanwhile, Oxfam is facing further allegations, reported in the Observer , that its staff used prostitutes in Chad in 2006. The charity allowed staff members to resign from the organisation and seek new aid jobs elsewhere.
