Google Chrome's Ad Filtering Goes Live Tomorrow, Here's How it Works

Chrome to start blocking ads on sites that violate Better Ads Standards

Google will turn on the so-called "ad-blocker" in its Chrome web browser tomorrow.

Sites won't be immediately punished for displaying these types of ads but they will be if their site receives enough complaints. This result led to the approach Chrome takes to protect users from numerous intrusive ad experiences identified by the Better Ads Standards: evaluate how well sites comply with the Better Ads Standards, inform sites of any issues encountered, provide the opportunity for sites to address identified issues, and remove ads from sites that continue to maintain a problematic ads experience. Google has set out more details on the circumstances ad filtering is applied or lifted in a support page.

The tool provides screenshots and videos of annoying ad experiences on a site so they can be easily found and corrected. Google announced plans to bring ad blocking to Chrome in June of a year ago, but until now, it hasn't been clear just what it'll look like or how it'll work. What if you think they're OK, but Google considers them annoying?

Basically, what will happen is that all ads on websites that have been found to fail the Better Ads Experience Program.

The Better Ads Standards are the result of public consumer research by the Coalition for Better Ads, an industry group focused on improving users' experience with online advertising. The company will look at the site and check it against ad-related patterns from the EasyList filter and block the request if there is a match.

President Obama is set against a riot of greenery that, according to the artist, charts "his path on Earth through those plants". I think the portrait is one answer. "In the first few seconds of our conversation, I knew she was the one for me".

"An ad blocker developed by Google" is a bit of an oxymoron in itself.

"It's important to note that some sites affected by this change may also contain Google ads", Roy-Chowdhury said.

Google is revealing today exactly what ads will be blocked, as well as how the company will notify site owners before the ad block is put into place.

For end users, nearly all of this work will go on behind the scenes, as Chrome's ad filters will recognize websites with a Failing rating and block network requests for images or Javascript when loading a page, effectively removing the ads entirely.

However, she does go on to offer some insight into publisher strategies away from the pop-up that she has witnessed in recent week, adding that "larger canvas in-line ads that users have the ability to scroll through" have proven popular, she reports.

Nancy Pelosi Against Budget Deal Unless DACA Vote
Senate leaders said that they do not want to shut down the government again and see little risk that it would occur. Rand Paul repeatedly held up votes on the budget plan, futilely seeking a vote on reversing spending increases.

While those are acceptable alternatives, Google says they should still be used sparingly.

Instead of using pop-ups or prestitials with countdowns, try using "takeover" ads that border the main content of the entire screen. As of February 12, 42% of sites which were failing the Better Ads Standards have resolved their issues and are now passing.

Indeed, this decision to block all ads may seem rather harsh.

In early February, Google said that just 1% of publishers are not compliant, based on an audit of more than 100,000 sites across North America and Europe.

"From some of the publishers I've spoken to [that have ads in contravention of its policies] they say the only reason they have them is because that's what advertisers want", reports LeBeau.
