Oxfam revelations lead to more accountability for charities

The Christian relief agency said in both cases, no laws were broken but "the staff members involved did not live up to the standards and expectations outlined in our code of conduct".

Meanwhile, Oxfam is facing further allegations, reported in the Observer, that its staff used prostitutes in Chad in 2006.

The newspaper said Roland van Hauwermeiren, who later worked in post-earthquake Haiti, was head of Oxfam's operations in Chad at the time.

He is expected to insist that Oxfam did not inform ministers of the.

The charity said allegations that under-age girls may have been involved were not proven.

Sex workers were reportedly invited to the Oxfam team house on a number of occasions.

It said one of the instances was "a case of failings in adequate safeguarding", which was reported to the Charity Commission.

Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow dead at 70
Born in Wyoming on October 3, 1947, Barlow graduated with a degree in comparative religion from Wesleyan University. Electronic Frontier Foundation ( EFF ) cofounder and activist John Perry Barlow has passed away .

'Since the Haiti case in 2011 we have introduced a range of measures to prevent sexual abuse and misconduct happening in the first place and improve how we handle any allegations'.

"Sexual abuse is a blight on society and Oxfam is not immune", Thomson said. "We were not told about the nature of these events".

He added: 'Everybody - the 25,000 staff and volunteers - are compromised by this, the hundreds of thousands of people who support Oxfam every month are compromised by this, and to everybody I apologise.

"I have so much respect for Oxfam, they do great work, but this is a sector-wide problem".

The boss then refused to apologise for the fact the charity continues to do work in Haiti. The charity allowed staff members to resign from the organisation and seek new aid jobs elsewhere.

Yesterday International Development secretary Penny Mordaunt vowed to axe funding to Oxfam and "any other organisation that has safeguarding issues".

All of these would be followed up, she told the BBC's Andrew Marr.

Justice Department's No. 3 official steps down
Brand is leaving to take a job in the private sector as general counsel, The Times reported . A source familiar with Brand's plans said she is going to accept a job with Walmart.

In its statement, Oxfam said it had informed its trustees, the government, as well as other major donors such as the European Union, the World Health Organization and other United Nations agencies of the investigation and the outcome.

Oxfam, one of the world's most prominent relief agencies, could lose its funding from the British government over reports that its workers exploited survivors of a massive quake in Haiti, and possibly other disasters, for sex.

Oxfam says it investigated the claims and four people were sacked.

"Our approach to this matter would have been different had the full details that have been reported been disclosed to us at the time", it said in a statement.

She admitted she was considering whether the organisation should receive any more funding from the Department for International Development - which gave it £32m in the last financial year.

Ms Mordaunt replied: "Well, quite".

She added: "what is so disturbing about Oxfam is that when this was reported to them, they completely failed to do the right thing".

"If they do not hand over all the information that they have from their investigation. then I can not work with them any more as an aid delivery partner - and any other organisation in those circumstances", she told the BBC.
