My 2 Cents: False Alarm Sends Hawaii Residents Into Panic

David Ige

According to the state government, a Hawaii Emergency Management employee mistakenly sent out the erroneous warning blast.

Questions are being asked all across the country's communications landscape as regulators, emergency managers and broadcasters attempt to figure out how a false emergency alert was sent out to residences of Hawaii through the IPAWS EAS and WEA systems. "And those responsible for this happening need to be held accountable in making sure this can not happen again", Gabbard said on CNN's "State of the Union". "It's literally 'fake news'".

"Everyone's rhetoric is making the situation worse and previous administrations have tried not to inflame the situation".

Security analyst Ankit Panda told the Atlantic magazine: "Consider if president Trump, instead of spending his time on the green at Mar-a-Lago's golf course, instead had seen reports on an attack on Hawaii and issued a valid retaliatory order".

Family members "called us and they were crying because they realized they wouldn't have made it to us", Trask said according to reporting by the Guardian's Martin Pengelly. After eight years during which Obama could do no wrong and was responsible for nothing, they now want Americans to believe that President Trump can do nothing right and is responsible for everything that goes wrong in the world, no matter how distant the nexus between the disaster and the White House. But what's the official guidance in the event of a North Korean missile attack?

Widespread panic caused by a false missile alarm sent to residents and tourists in Hawaii triggers concerns about U.S. readiness for a real threat; insight from Adm. Robert Natter, retired U.S. Navy four-star admiral and former commander of the 7th Fleet in Japan.

Trump has derided Kim as "Rocket Man" and dismissed negotiations with North Korea as a waste of time, threatening to wipe the country out if it threatens the United States. The missile, launched during a drill, eventually landed far out in the Pacific.

In 2016, the BBC revealed the contents of the so-called War Book, which was drawn up during the Cold War and contained detailed plans for broadcasting in the event of a nuclear strike, but current broadcasting arrangements are not public knowledge.

Mr Perry said: "The risk of accidental nuclear war is not hypothetical - accidents have happened in the past and humans will err again".
