Facebook news feeds to put more focus on 'meaningful' content

News Feed FYI: Bringing People Closer Together | Facebook Newsroom

Tweaking users' feeds may cause the social media platform to lose some of its luster for content producers or media companies, especially video makers that can not make money on Facebook regardless of how many of their videos go viral, said Cho Sodam, founder of Dotface, a youth-oriented media startup based in Seoul, South Korea.

Adam Mosseri, whose title is head of News Feed, said in a blog post, "We will predict which posts you might want to interact with your friends about, and show these posts higher in the feed". That's why we've always put friends and family at the core of the experience.

The American Internet entrepreneur said they have recently obtained feedback from the community that public content is crowding out personal moments.

Tweaking the news feed to encourage people to talk about their personal lives might, therefore, be seen as a means of increasing Facebook's commercial value. They make this argument despite the fact that Facebook has editorial control over content posted on the platform and - with the changes now being implemented - the fact that Facebook is deciding what factors make news sources worthy of being placed in its News Feed. He declared that he is changing the goal he gives from focusing on helping users find relevant content to helping them have more meaningful social interactions.

He added that people would be spending less time on Facebook and we feel good about it as that would make them rejoice and enjoy the little time they would spend on using or scrolling Facebook, which would eventually be good for the business. We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health. Now, going forward, News Feed priority will be given to posts from friends, family members and groups.

That innovation, tested in some countries in recent months, would have left commercial posts sitting on a completely separate feed from the main one.

Parse.ly, an analytics company used by many top publishers, said in a blog post previous year that data from February to October showed a 25 percent decrease in Facebook referral traffic.

Not only may Facebook's change of heart affect how brands and media companies make money, but it's already hitting Facebook where it hurts. Such a move would be a welcome development, and Media Matters has recommended that Facebook include it in its algorithm. Additionally, content from news publishers and brands will be given less exposure on the news feed.

Based on this, we're making a major change to how we build Facebook.

Saints and Jaguars win wild card games
Bortles ultimately rushed for 88 yards on 10 carries and was 12 of 23 for 87 yards passing, with one touchdown and no turnovers. The Jaguars will be the underdog this week, but you can count on the #Sacksonville fans to send that Duval pride north.

We started making changes in this direction past year, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products.

For example, there are many tight-knit communities around TV shows and sports teams. Some news helps start conversations on important issues. "Good on Facebook - they are doing the right thing, long-term".

Facebook's artificial intelligence is certainly good enough to identify infant images, and let people choose to see fewer of them-or, if they wish, even more of them.

Rather than bringing people together, users have been led to passively.
