Congratulations as George Weah Reportedly Elected President of Liberia

Football legend George Weah wins Liberian presidential election

The victor of the election will replace Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Africa's first democratically elected president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Liberia is Africa's oldest modern republic.

Weah starred in top-flight European football teams Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan in the 1990s before playing briefly for Chelsea and Manchester City in England later in his career.

President Akufo-Addo has congratulated Liberia's president-elect, George Weah.

A statement by the party's spokesperson, Mo Ali, explained that the party's candidate and incumbent vice president, Joseph Boakai, will also be available at the meeting.

Early reports indicate that Weah has indeed won the run-off.

With 98 percent of votes counted, Weah has the majority of support in Tuesday's runoff.

Whoever wins the election faces an economy battered by lower commodity prices for its main exports of rubber and iron ore and a rapidly depreciating currency.

He clinched votes in 12 out of 15 counties in the West African country to become the 25th President of Liberia.

Living standards in Liberia remain among the worst in the world.

But Mr Weah's election is not without controversy, as his running mate is Jewel Taylor, former wife of the warlord and ex-President Charles Taylor, who is serving a jail sentence in the United Kingdom for war crimes.

Turnout for the second round stood at 56%, National Election Commission (NEC) Chairman Jerome Korkoyah told reporters in Monrovia.

But Weah was similarly resolute that his second run for the presidency would be successful.

His CDC party contested the results in 2005 and 2011, but has refrained so far this time.

On Tuesday polling stations displayed voter lists as a mark of transparency.
