After linking PAN and mobile with Aadhaar, now its time for Facebook

Facebook may soon ask you to link your account with your Aadhaar Card

After a Reddit user noticed a peculiar prompt from Facebook requesting the user to input his/her "name as per Aadhaar" for opening an account, speculations were rife if Aadhaar is now being mandatory for opening the social media account.

It further said that the mention of "Aadhaar" in the sign-up process was part of a test ran "with a small number of users in India". We tried to create an account on various platforms such as Windows, Android, iOS and web but it did not appear to us.

Softbank reaches deal to get big discount on Uber shares
SoftBank will occupy two seats on the company's board and will now be an extremely influential player in decisions at Uber. Uber investors and employees tendered shares worth about 20 percent of the company, sources told The Wall Street Journal .

"Using the name on your Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognise you", says the prompt when one submits the name for a new account. However, sources in the company said a small percentage of Indian users who are signing up for the service on mobile can see this message for now.

Facebook isn't the first online company to ask consumers for Aadhaar. Previously, it used to suggest users to use the real name. It had earlier asked the Centre to explain why it was necessary to link these documents to the 12-digit unique identification number. That is Facebook has displayed "use the name on your Aadhaar card". With the ever-increasing pool of internet users, the country is a major market for Facebook and will play a big role in the growth of the site.

An Amazon spokesperson clarified to Inc42 that only in case of lost packages or missing delivery, where a detailed check needs to be done, does the Amazon agent ask the customer to furnish an identity proof. Are there any plans make the Aadhaar card the only permissible ID verification document in the near future? There have been concerns about the safety of Aadhaar data after private details of users were leaked from government websites and even from private organisations including banks, telecom operators and financial institutions. As per the paper, a nuanced approach towards data protection will have to be followed in India, bearing in mind the fact that individual privacy is a fundamental right limited by reasonable restrictions.

We aren't sure of the end game yet but this sure is a positive move from Facebook to tackle fake information on the social media network.
